first, I admit that the loss of data is abosulte our fault, and
blames primarily go to me. 3k and other sysops talked about backup
for a long time yet I did not pay attention. We did have several
hd problems before without losing any valuable data, and this time no
luck anymore.

Here I want to clarify a few things not for excusing myself for this stupid
mistake but to ease the hurted users. though we provide free service, we
did and do care everyone's feelings. Some may question about the reality
of this virtual society, but I do think many of us not only kill our time
here but also water with feelings and emotion.

After last major upgrade, we shifted our server from an ordinary PC to
a small-business class compaq server. We are enjoying the power of its
capacity yet our options become limited. The major issue is the hd.
This server requires hot-swap capable SCSI HDs with compaq specific-
designed mounting trays. Besides those fixed hd slots, the inside of
the server is quite compact and therefore impossible to put another
cheap/ordinary hd. Given its incredible high price of the HD (36G costs
half grand at least), we hesitated and didn't buy another. Therefore,
unlike at least one HDs were put in our old server specifically for backup,
we only backup'ed data to another partition of the same HD. The server
also came with an option of UPS, and we did not add it based on the same
reason. Our limited budgets were spent on memory and other critical
items.

The failure of this hd is mainly due to recent two power-offs. One was
excuted by MIT locksmith, and the other was due to a noname who unplugged
the machine accidentally, I believe. some may still remember the
dramatically slowdown of the server the day before it died. One of our
sysops noticed this problem, and did shutdown the server for repairing.
When he restarted the server, he noticed the problem of HD was not gone,
instead, it became worse. Therefore, he decided to shut it down again for
a thorough diagnosis. Given special attention had been paid on recent
hot topics, we decided the check should be carried out off-peak (ie in
midnight) so that it might less affect the ordinary usage. Now it
proves we are terrible wrong - the HD did not survive through this
critical period. When I played my role as a CRO (chief reboot officer),
I found the hd was a dead stick.

WTC falls, Enron collapses, yet the memory of this bbs is blank. I am
here to ensure you two things. First we will try our best to repair
the broken HD to recover the data; Second, I promise you the loss of
the data will never happen again (the second HD is on the way to MIT).
