TO READ THE README FILE
********************************************************
This README.TXT file covers compatibility information,
late-breaking news, and usage tips for Norton AntiVirus.
It is installed on your hard disk in the same location as
the Norton AntiVirus product files.
To read the Readme file:
1. Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the location
where your Norton AntiVirus files are installed.
If you installed Norton AntiVirus to the default
location, the files are in:
C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus.
2. Double-click Readme.txt to open the file in Notepad
or WordPad. The Readme file includes instructions for
printing it if you want to do so.
3. Close the word processing program when you are done
reading the file.

Generating an MSI log file to troubleshoot Install
issues
--------------------------------------------------
If Norton AntiVirus fails to install we suggest creating
an MSI log file before contacting Symantec's Support
services. This will help our Support team resolve your
issues faster.
To create the log file:
X:\Setup.exe /L* c:\install.log
Sending outgoing email can be slower within Outlook
Express or Outlook under Windows 2000
---------------------------------------------------
Due to a Microsoft issue with Windows 2000, Outlook
Express and Outlook will send (SMTP) email much slower
with Norton AntiVirus email protection enabled. Microsoft
has resolved this issue and a hot fix that can be
downloaded from:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q294/7/69.ASP
Incompatibility with Office 2000 and the Norton
AntiVirus Plug-in on German Windows 98
-----------------------------------------------
Office 2000 can hang when inserting infected documents
on German Windows 98. This is resolved by upgrading the
DCOM version to version 1.3 or later. This upgrade can
be downloaded from: http://www.microsoft.com/com/
Norton AntiVirus Toolbar Menu is named incorrectly
--------------------------------------------------
Norton AntiVirus can be added into the Explorer
toolbar menu by right clicking the Explorer tool bar
and selecting Norton AntiVirus. However, due to a
Microsoft bug it can show up as a duplicate menu item.
This is documented in the following Microsoft

Norton AntiVirus integration with Windows Explorer
--------------------------------------------------
Norton AntiVirus automatically adds the Toolbar button
to the first Microsoft browser to be launched after
install. Other Microsoft browsers will need to be
manually added by right clicking the explorer tool bar
and selecting Norton AntiVirus.
Completion of a "Full System Scan" is never reported in
System Status panel
-------------------------------------------------------
Windows 2000 and XP users with NTFS partitions logged in
with a USER account will not be able to update the
system status with a completed system scan. This can
only be updated successfully by logging in and
completing a scan with Administrator rights.
Unable to browse for exclusion files under Windows
NT 4.0
--------------------------------------------------
The file exclusion dialog does not function on Windows
NT 4.0. Currently there is no resolution.
Zone Alarm incompatibility issue
--------------------------------
You may encounter problems using Norton AntiVirus with
Zone Alarm installed on your system. We recommend
updating your version of Zone Alarm or uninstalling it
when using Norton AntiVirus.
Network Associates PGP compatibility issue
------------------------------------------
Network Associate's PGP encrypts the boot record,
preventing Norton AntiVirus from scanning them for
viruses.
Digitally signing emails in Outlook Express 6.x and
Office XP
---------------------------------------------------
Outlook Express 6.x offers the ability to digitally sign
emails to ensure that they are not modified during
transfer. Norton AntiVirus email protection will modify
the emails during virus repair. This will create an
Outlook alert stating the message has been modified.
Incompatibility with Outlook XP and the Norton AntiVirus
Plug-in on Windows 98
--------------------------------------------------------
Outlook XP can hang when creating a new email on Windows
98. This is resolved by upgrading the DCOM version to
version 1.3 or later. This upgrade can be downloaded
from: http://www.microsoft.com/com/
This can also be resolved by disabling the office
plug-in using the following steps:
1. Start Norton AntiVirus 2003.
2. Click Options.
3. Click Miscellaneous.
4. Uncheck "Enable Office Plug-in".
Warning: This will prevent Norton AntiVirus from
scanning embedded viruses within Microsoft Office
files.
5. Click OK.
Auto-Protect (NAVAPW32.EXE, NAVAP.VxD, and SYMEVNT.386)
-------------------------------------------------------
Auto-Protect and Inoculation ignore disk label
(volume label) changes to prevent false virus alerts.
Viruses cannot use the disk label to infect your system.
For the same reason, changes to the OEM ID in a boot
record are not reported.
By design, Auto-Protect does not report writes to a boot
sector or master boot record if the new sector is
identical to the one previously on the drive. For
example, you may use a disk editor to write back the
same data to a boot sector or master boot record.
Disable Auto-Protect temporarily before you save the
file.
Dynamic Volumes on Windows 2000 and XP
--------------------------------------
Norton AntiVirus does not fully support Dynamic Volumes.
Scanning these drives may result in the error message
"Unable to read boot record on drive." This is because
these drives are not bootable. However, Norton AntiVirus
will scan the drive for infected files.
Email message headers contains
"X-NortonAV-TimeoutProtection:X"
--------------------------------
Norton AntiVirus Email Protection options include a
feature called "Timeout Protection". This provides
timeout protection for your email client software
during email transfers. If your POP3 email server sends
a message with an attachment to the Norton AntiVirus
POP3 email scanner without Timeout Protection enabled,
there is a possibility you could lose the message.
Timeout Protection sends
"X-NortonAV-TimeoutProtection:X" as a continuous header
to the email client until the incoming message is
complete.
If you have multiple "X-NortonAV-TimeoutProtection:X"
entries in the header, it indicates how long it took
to get the complete message from your POP3 incoming
mail server.
To turn off Timeout Protection, follow these steps:
1. Start Norton AntiVirus 2003.
2. Click Options.
3. Click Email.
4. Uncheck "Protect against timeouts when scanning
email."
This will remove the "X-NortonAV-TimeoutProtection:X"
header information.
5. Click OK
6. Restart your computer.
Inoculation Change Alerts
-------------------------
When responding to a Boot Record alert, you must
determine if the change is legitimate (choose Update the
saved copy of my Boot Record to let Norton AntiVirus
create a new copy of you Boot record) or the change
indicates the activity of a virus (choose
Repair to let Norton AntiVirus restore the item).
The following examples demonstrate legitimate changes.
In these cases you should choose Inoculate to let
Norton AntiVirus generate new inoculation data.
* Installing or Upgrading Windows
If you are running Norton AntiVirus and reinstalling
or upgrading Windows, you may receive more than one
Boot Record Alert. Choose "The change to my
Boot Record is expected. Update the saved copy of
my Boot record" to respond to the alert.
Windows modifies boot records during the install
operation and restarts your system more than once.
Each time your system is restarted, these changes are
properly detected by Norton AntiVirus. If you choose
"The Change is unexpected. Restore my boot my Boot
record", you are undoing some of the changes that
Windows is making and, therefore, corrupting your
boot records. You may not be able to start your
system from its hard disk. If this occurs, start up
from a floppy disk and reinstall Windows.
* Partitioning Software
If you use partitioning software (such as Partition
Magic) or drive overlay software (such as Disk
Manager and EZ drive), you may receive Boot Record
Alerts for legitimate changes. When you set or modify
partitions after Norton AntiVirus is installed,
choose "The change to my Boot Record is expected.
Update the saved copy of my Boot record", to respond
to these alerts.
For example, Partition Magic may generate several
legitimate Boot Record alerts when setting or
modifying partitions. If you choose "The Change is
unexpected. Restore my boot my Boot record", your
drive may be rendered inaccessible with little chance
of recovery.
Mijenix ZipMagic and Norton AntiVirus installation
--------------------------------------------------
Norton AntiVirus should be installed before ZipMagic is
installed. If ZipMagic is installed first, you must
change a ZipMagic option setting for proper operation.
To configure an already installed ZipMagic:
* Access ZipMagic options and set up Norton AntiVirus
as a program that recognizes ZipMagic archives as
files, not as folders.
For more information, consult your ZipMagic
documentation.
MO drive incompatibility with Norton AntiVirus
----------------------------------------------
When Norton AntiVirus scans certain MO drives such as
the Olympus Turbo MO 640S III, you may experience a
system crash when scanning your hard drive. To correct
the problem you are required to Disable Int 13 support
for the drive.
To disable Int 13 support:
1 Click Start, Settings, Control Panel.
2 Double-click on the System icon.
3 In the System Properties dialog box, click Device
Manager.
4 Ensure "View devices by type" is selected.
5 In the device list, expand Disk drives.
6 Double-click the disk drive item defining your MO
drive. (For example, OLYMPUS MOS364)
7 Click the Settings tab.
8 On the settings panel, uncheck the box next to
Int 13 unit. (This disables Int 13 support for the
drive)
9 Click OK to close the MO drive's Property Settings
dialog.
10 Click OK to close the System Properties dialog.
11 Click Yes when prompted to restart your computer.
NAVDX and Long Filenames (LFNs)
-------------------------------
NAVDX, the command-line scanner used for startup scans
and emergency recovery, does not properly display long
filenames in a DOS box.
Script Blocking not enabled when scripting is not
present
-------------------------------------------------
The Script Blocking Options appear to be active even
when you don't have scripting enabled on your computer.
These options do not take effect unless scripting is
enabled. If you have not enabled scripting, your
computer is not vulnerable to scripting threats.
Short File Name (SFN) alias generation during install
-----------------------------------------------------
If you are installing Norton AntiVirus to a custom
location that is a Long File Name (LFN) folder, SFN
alias generation must not be disabled during the
install. To re-enable SFN alias generation, run
REGEDT32 and change the following registry key entry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem
NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation should be set to 0 to
enable SFN alias generation.
You must restart your computer in order for changes in
SFN alias generation to take effect. Set the value back
to 1 after installation to disable SFN alias generation,
if desired.
Updating Windows 98/Millennium video drivers for
Auto-Protect
------------------------------------------------
Some video drivers for Windows 98/Millennium may
cause display corruption or an apparent system lock up
when an Auto-Protect alert is generated. To correct the
problem, upgrade to the latest version of the video
driver.
Using Norton AntiVirus with directory symbolic
links/NTFS junctions
----------------------------------------------
Using directory symbolic links, also known as NTFS
junctions, on Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 or Windows XP
machines may increase hard drive scanning times due to
repeated scanning.
Using the Windows Millennium and Windows XP restore
feature
---------------------------------------------------
Restoring your system to a previous setting using
Windows Millennium/XP System Restore might revert virus
definition engine changes and cause mismatched virus
definitions. To resolve this issue, run LiveUpdate to
install the latest virus definitions.
Win 98/Millennium System Shutdown and Auto-Protect
--------------------------------------------------
Auto-Protect is often configured to scan removable media
devices for boot sector viruses during system shutdown.
While scanning the boot sector, Auto-Protect can display
a text mode message that notes it is currently scanning
a boot record. Some video boards and video drivers have
problems switching to text mode after the shutdown
screen is displayed and cause a system lockup. Because
of this, we have disabled the AP text message from
displaying by default.
You can control whether or not the text message is
displayed by merging the following Registry Entry files
with your Registry:
APMSGOFF.REG Prevents the AP text message from
displaying
APMSGON.REG Permits the AP text message to be displayed
To merge a Registry Entry file with your Registry,
simply double click the file from the Explorer or a My
Computer window. Both files are located where Norton
AntiVirus is installed. By default, this is the
C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus folder.
Note that if a virus is found, Auto-Protect will attempt
to display a message irrespective of this setting.
