What steps do I need to follow to establish a serial connection that
allows SoftICE to be displayed on a second machine?
There are two serial client utilities that can be used. One is Serial.
exe which is a 16 bit real mode client. The other is Serial32.exe.
This is a 32-bit console application. These two clients have slightly
different command line options, but the following instructions apply
to both. Here are the steps necessary for establishing a serial
connection.
Check your NULL modem cable with the diagram on page 22 of the "Using
SoftICE" Manual.
Connect the two machines with the NULL modem cable.
Run the Serial.exe utility on the remote machine (see the manual for
the command line options).
Start SoftICE on the primary machine.
Type SERIAL ON com_port baud from the SoftICE command window.
At this point the SoftICE screen should be displayed on the remote
machine. The primary machine should be displaying the Windows desktop.
If you are running Windows 95 on the primary machine, there are two
additional steps needed.
Disable the com port that SoftICE uses on the primary machine. This
can be done from the Control Panel|Device Manager. This is necessary
because the plug and play mechanism of Windows 95 will otherwise try
to re-program the com port while SoftICE is using it.
Use the Loader32 utility to set the com port that SoftICE needs to use
on the primary machine. This can be done from the Edit|SoftICE
Initialization Settings menu item in Loader32. The remote debugging
tab will have a combo box that allows you to select the com port.
Other things to watch for:
Make sure the SoftICE line mode is no greater than 50 lines. The
serial client cannot handle more that 50 line mode.
If the autobaud auto detection does not work, specify a baud rate on
both the serial.exe command line, and with the serial command in the
SoftICE command window (see the manual for details on the auto
detection feature).
If you want the serial connection to be established automatically as
SoftICE is loaded, place the SERIAL ON com_port baud in the SoftICE
INIT string prior to the X.
